In Honor And Remembrance

In Honor and Remembrance CeremonySeptember 11, 2009

Emptiness and sorrow filled our nation’s heart on September 11, 2001, a day that will forever be embedded in the minds of Americans. Woodmen of the World members organize annual In Honor and Remembrance ceremonies, giving members, family and friends a chance to grieve over the lives lost that tragic day and to pay respect to the heroes that responded.

Ceremonies are held every year on Sept. 11, and have evolved into a public forum to thank local firefighters, police officers, emergency medical technicians, and members of the military.

In 2008, Woodmen of the World member lodges conducted more than 500 In Honor and Remembrance ceremonies. They included:

  • Presenting an American flag to the town, a civic organization, or to a family affected by the terrorist attacks
  • Dedicating a flagpole in a public park
  • Planting a garden or tree in a victim or hero’s name
  • Commissioning a piece of public art that symbolizes the sorrow and hope associated with the day
  • Presenting American Patriot Handbooks to newly-naturalized citizens

Please join Woodmen of the World on Sept. 11, 2009, in fulfilling our promise to never forget the tragedy and those who perished that day.
