Omaha North Students Learn About In-Demand Financial Careers and Present Findings to Woodmen of the World Executives

April 28, 2014

Omaha, Neb. – Woodmen of the World Life Insurance Society and/or Omaha Woodmen Life Insurance Society and has partnered with Omaha North’s Academy of Finance to provide students hands-on experience with actuarial and investment professionals.

Omaha North seniors gave multimedia presentations to Woodmen of the Word executives on Thursday, April 24 from 11 a.m. – 12:45 p.m. at the Woodmen Tower in downtown Omaha. The students presented what they learned about the actuarial function and about the types of investments insurance organizations should consider. Additionally, each student shared his or her own web-based biography, showcasing personal achievements and career goals. Following the presentations, Congressman Lee Terry spoke about the importance of financial literacy and the role government has in education. He also presented certificates to the students.

“This partnership enhances academic curriculum by enabling students to enact their new knowledge, skills and perspectives in an authentic environment, which helps to strengthen their knowledge” said Randy Rotschafer, VP Actuary and Chief Actuary, Woodmen of the World. “These students have demonstrated exceptional growth as a result of their experiences and we wish them the best in their future careers.”

This partnership helps Omaha North to better prepare students for Omaha-based careers that offer higher wages, largely due to the technical expertise required to perform in these jobs. According to the Bureau of Labor’s Occupational Outlook Handbook, the employment of actuaries is projected to grow 26 percent from 2012 to 2022, much faster than the average for all occupations. Woodmen of the World helps give students a better understanding of the actuarial and investment careers, promotes finance education among students, and provides opportunities for students to learn from professionals in the field.
